What players are actually saying

Weighty combat, a cinematic story and gory finishers, held back by a heavy unlock grind and online play that was shaky until 2026.

88% positive on Steam · 116,731 reviews

1. Summary

Most reviews in this slice recommend Mortal Kombat 11. Players like how heavy and deliberate the fighting feels, say the graphics still hold up, and describe the story mode as a playable action movie, with fatalities and brutalities supplying the gore the series is known for. Solo players get Towers of Time, Klassic Towers, the Krypt and deep character customization. Several reviewers say it runs well on modest PCs and the Steam Deck, and others mostly play it in couch matches with friends and family. Reviewers who state a preference between this and Mortal Kombat 1 nearly always pick this one, and players who bought it cheaply in a sale often call it excellent value at that price.

The complaint the longer reviews discuss most is the unlock grind: randomized Krypt chests, Towers of Time full of unfair modifiers, several currencies and a premium shop. Online play on PC is what thumbs-down reviews raise most often. Between late 2024 and early 2026, desync errors ended match after match for affected players; desync reports nearly disappear from reviews written from spring 2026, after players reported a fix, while failed connections to the game's servers still lock some players out of single-player modes and progress. Smaller groups are angry about bans tied to Steam Family Sharing, a bug that freezes Koins and XP, the Kronika final boss, paid DLC fighters and a 100+ GB install. Opinion is split on the Krypt, on the slower and more defensive combat compared with Mortal Kombat X, and on how approachable the game is for newcomers.

2. What keeps coming up

What players praise
Cinematic story modeHigh

The story mode or its cutscenes come up in 45% of the longer reviews, and praise outnumbers complaints about three to one. Players describe it as "Basically watching a Mortal Kombat film but you play all the fight scenes", enjoy the time-travel premise that puts young and old versions of characters side by side, and single out the Raiden and Liu Kang arc, the ending and the Aftermath expansion. Newcomers say it introduced them to the series, and a few bought the game for the story alone. Critics call the writing convoluted or cringeworthy ("plot is bad. Real bad."), fault individual voice performances, and dislike the long gaps between fights, though several negative reviewers say they enjoyed the campaign.

Visuals and animationHigh

29% of the longer reviews praise the graphics, character models, facial animation or stage design, and some say it still looks better than newer fighters. One short review reads, in full, "Great graphics and amazing art." The few dissenters find the art style too bright or dislike specific character redesigns.

Combat that feels weighty and deliberateHigh

Players who like the fighting (27% of the longer reviews describe it in positive terms) call it tight, responsive and satisfying, with a high skill ceiling. They value the shorter combos, the focus on spacing and punishes, and the split offensive and defensive meters; one long-time fighting game player found "Mortal Kombat 11's slower, more methodical and grounded combat is starkly refreshing." Other players find the same pace stiff, as the Mortal Kombat X comparison below shows.

Fatalities, brutalities and goreHigh

When the finishers and the gore come up, in 19% of the longer reviews, it is almost always as a highlight: inventive fatalities, multiple brutalities per character, the return of Friendships, and X-ray style Krushing Blows. One player summed it up as "Just blood and gore, thats all this game had but thats enough". A handful find it too gory or miss the X-ray moves of Mortal Kombat X.

Value on saleHigh

13% of the longer reviews mention buying on sale or at a discount, and some advise waiting for one. Several suggest getting the Ultimate Edition when it is cheap: "buy the ultimate version on sale and you'll get your money's worth." A smaller group says the base game is not worth full price given how much of the roster and story is sold separately.

Customization and single-player contentHigh

Customization (skins, gear, intros and custom move variations) draws praise in 14% of the longer reviews, and some players call the amount of solo content unusual for a fighting game. One veteran wrote, "There are so many options to personalize your favorite fighters, and that adds a lot of replay value for me." Some of the same reviews add that unlocking it all is a grind.

Couch play with friends and familyMedium

Playing with friends, siblings, partners or parents, including local couch matches, comes up in 14% of the longer reviews. "Couch one vs one is where this game shines in my house." Some players who gave up on online play say local matches are where they get their fun.

Preferred over Mortal Kombat 1Medium

Mortal Kombat 1 comes up in 16% of the longer reviews. Across all reviews, favourable comparisons ("better than MK1") outnumber the reverse by more than ten to one; those reviewers point to more content, the Krypt, better customization, the absence of the Kameo system and better performance. "Coming back to MK11 after playing MK1 is like a breathe of fresh air."

Runs well on modest hardware and Steam DeckMedium

About 6% of the longer reviews say the game is well optimized, runs on old laptops or integrated graphics, or plays well on the Steam Deck despite its Unsupported label. "Even on my shitty laptop with integrated graphics, I can run 60+ fps CONSISTENTLY." Other players report crashes and stutter (see PC technical problems).

Where players are split
The KryptHigh

Reviews that mention the Krypt (14% of the longer ones) divide fairly evenly. Fans enjoy exploring Shang Tsung's island in third person, with its puzzles and lore ("the real end game is the krypt"), and a few call it the best Krypt in the series. Critics find the randomized chest rewards, multiple currencies, item-gated areas, traps and online requirement tedious: "I would pay double the price to never have to play The Kyrpt mode ever again."

Slower combat and new systems compared with Mortal Kombat XHigh

12% of the longer reviews compare the game with Mortal Kombat X, and a smaller group across all reviews calls Mortal Kombat X the better game or recommends it instead ("Just a downgrade to MKX."). The slower, more defensive pace that some players love feels stiff or clunky to others. Fatal Blows, Krushing Blows, breakaways and flawless block attacks come up in 7% of the longer reviews. Supporters like the comebacks and drama they create; critics, mostly players with many hours in the game, argue the systems reward the losing player: "giving someone a guaranteed 30 percent super move FOR LOSING is not a good mechanic."

How approachable it isMedium

9% of the longer reviews call the game beginner-friendly or easy to learn, while 8% describe a steep learning curve and strict input timing. The tutorial gets both reactions: "I think this game does the best tutorial out of all the fighting games I've played by now" stands against players who could not finish its advanced lessons ("congrats u beat the hardest boss of the game"). Some keyboard players found it hard going and recommend a controller.

Guest fighters and missing classicsMedium

Guest characters come up in 7% of the longer reviews. Where those reviewers give a clear opinion it is mostly warm toward Terminator, RoboCop, Rambo, Spawn and the Joker, several of whom, reviewers note, are voiced by the original actors: "RoboCop, Rambo, and the gang won me over". Others would rather have series regulars who appear in the story or the Krypt but are not playable ("why no Reptile, Sektor or Cyrax tho").

What frustrates players
The unlock grind, Towers of Time and microtransactionsHigh

19% of the longer reviews discuss the progression systems, mostly to complain. They describe cosmetics locked behind randomized Krypt chests, separate currencies (Koins, Souls, Hearts, Time Krystals), gear that has to be levelled piece by piece, and a rotating premium shop: "You enter the Krypt hoping for cool skins, only to spend 80 hours opening randomized chests to unlock a single belt buckle for Sub-Zero." The Towers of Time draw particular anger for modifiers such as screen-filling projectiles and summons that the AI spams ("You're fighting modifiers, not opponents."), and some players note that the game lets an AI fighter play the towers for you. A smaller group enjoys the grind and says it keeps them playing; others point out that the Ultimate Edition still leaves most unlocks to earn.

Unreliable online play on PC: desync and server failuresHigh

Online play failing comes up in 12% of the longer reviews and 20% of all negative reviews. Two problems recur. The "The game session has desynchronized" error ends matches, and some reviewers tie it to recent Windows 11 versions; one player who logged 100 matches found "78/100 matches ended due to desynchronisation or disconnect." Desync complaints rose from 1% of reviews written in late 2024 to 7% of those written in the third quarter of 2025, then fell to almost none in reviews written from spring 2026, after players reported a fix ("Desync is fixed!! Buy this game."). The other problem is failing connections to the game's servers, which lock out the Krypt, towers, customization and progress; dropped connections in single-player modes cost players their runs: "I lost connection for a moment and got booted back to the menu...in single player towers." Server and connection complaints still turn up in negative reviews written since spring 2026, though less often than in 2025. Some reviewers also cite the lack of crossplay between the Steam version and consoles.

A tough online community and lopsided matchmakingMedium

Online opponents are described as spammers, smurfs or players with thousands of matches in 8% of the longer reviews, and newcomers say ranked play matched them against far stronger players. "Forcing fresh new players to match up against spamming sweaty level 45+ is not how you do a rank-based fighting game." Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Joker and Sheeva are among the characters named as over-used or overpowered.

PC technical problemsMedium

5% of the longer reviews report crashes, failure to launch, stutter, cutscenes capped at 30 fps or stuttering, or Xbox controller buttons mapped wrongly. Some needed workarounds: "you have to go into the game files and do some text editing wizardry just to get controller support working correctly."

The Kronika final bossLow

4% of the longer reviews mention the final boss or boss fights. The complaints focus on her immunity to grabs and many specials, constant teleporting, and an unskippable cutscene on every retry. "she is basically invincible", as one player put it, and another stopped playing after failing to beat her.

Paid fighters and an incomplete packageLow

Roster characters and the Aftermath story sold as DLC, or an Ultimate Edition that still lacks some skins, draw objections in 4% of the longer reviews. "It's appalling to see almost half of the fighters grayed out behind a paywall."

Install sizeLow

3% of the longer reviews complain about the 100 to 150 GB install: "110 gigs of space is ridiculous for a fighting game". Some suggest making the story cinematics an optional download.

Bans tied to Family Sharing and account problemsLow

2% of the longer reviews (63 reviews overall) report a "temporarily banned" message after using Steam Family Sharing or Remote Play, or for no reason they could find, with slow or no help from support. "Banned from the game due to family sharing?"

Menu ads for Mortal Kombat 1Low

A small group objects to full-screen promotions for Mortal Kombat 1 in a game they paid for: "Every time I open the game I get a full bright splash screen offering to buy MK1 instead and there's no way to disable it."

Koins and XP stop accruingLow

A handful of players report an account bug that leaves Koins and XP frozen, which blocks the Krypt and character towers: "im stuck at 500 coin and level 1 and no fix".

3. The player conversation

Most reviews are short and affectionate ("best MK", "better than MK1", "GET OVER HERE"), and the longer ones usually praise the core game before listing caveats about the grind or online play. Thumbs-down reviews most often point to things outside a match: online play that will not connect or stay in sync, server-tied progression, bans and bugs. Some of those negative reviewers say they love the game itself.

Complaints about Fatal Blows, breakaways, balance and ranked play come mainly from players with dozens of hours or more who play online seriously, and many of them measure the game against Mortal Kombat X. Install-size complaints tend to come early, from players with only a few hours. Comments on the story, the tutorial and the Kronika fight come from across the playtime range.

The recommendation rate in this slice held around 88 to 90% for reviews written in late 2023 and the first half of 2024, slipped to 82 to 85% across 2025, the same period in which desync complaints peaked, and was back at 88 to 89% for reviews written in mid-2026, after players reported the desync fix. Comparisons with Mortal Kombat 1 run through the whole period, and those that pick a side favour this game by more than ten to one. Joke reviews (ASCII art, award begging, copypasta) are common and were ignored.

4. What the developers could do

  1. Keep PC online play stable across Windows versions. Desync and server failures were the most common reason for thumbs-down reviews, and some of those reviewers say they like the fighting itself.
  2. Let single-player modes and progress work without a server connection. Players lost tower runs and Krypt rewards to brief disconnects and could not reach the Krypt, towers or customization when sign-in failed.
  3. Cut the unlock grind. Targeted rewards instead of random Krypt chests, fewer currencies, and optional Towers of Time modifiers would address the most discussed complaint about the game outside of online play.
  4. Fix account problems and answer appeals. Bans after Family Sharing or Remote Play and the frozen Koins and XP bug lock paying players out of modes they bought, and reviewers say support did not respond.
  5. Repair the PC port's rough edges. Xbox controller mapping that needs ini edits, crashes on launch and stuttering 30 fps cutscenes still appear in reviews, next to reports of good performance.
  6. Sell a truly complete edition and drop the Mortal Kombat 1 menu ads. Players resent paid fighters, missing skins in the Ultimate Edition and full-screen upsells in a game they bought.
  7. Rebalance the Kronika fight. Letting grabs and specials work on her, and letting players skip the cutscene on retries, would ease a fight some players call close to unbeatable.
  8. Make the story cinematics an optional download. Several reviewers complain about the 100+ GB install, and one said the disk space mattered more to them than continuing.
