THE GAMEQ VERDICT10,000 reviews analyzed
What players are actually saying
1. Summary
Players still love the game underneath. The three-protagonist story, the satire and the size of Los Santos get the warmest praise, and dozens of reviewers say they played the campaign for the first time this year, while others came back for one last run before GTA VI. Reviewers who write about the Enhanced upgrade praise its ray tracing, DLSS and much faster loading, and several are surprised how well it runs on modest PCs. GTA Online splits the room. With a crew of friends it is the reason some people have hundreds of hours; alone or in public lobbies, reviewers describe a grind built to sell Shark Cards, made worse by heist payout cuts they tie to the Kortz Center update.
The frustrations centre on Online and the PC wrapper. Among the 1,284 negative reviews, 17% complain about the Online economy (grind, nerfed heists, Shark Cards, GTA+), 15% about getting into the game at all (Rockstar launcher and account verification, crashes on launch, BattlEye kicks), and 13% about cheaters and modders in public sessions. Long-standing bugs, Linux and Steam Deck being locked out of Online, the removal of text chat and the Australian casino block follow. Criticism of the campaign comes from a smaller group, while Online is where reviewers divide. One piece of advice that recurs is to buy it for the story, ideally on sale, and play Online only with friends in private sessions.
2. What keeps coming up
What players praise
The story and its three protagonistsHigh
Michael, Franklin and Trevor are at the centre of the positive reviews, and 800 reviews bring up the story, the campaign or the three leads. Players praise the dialogue, the heists inside the campaign, switching between characters mid-mission and how funny the writing still is: "The story is great, and the characters and dialogue are what really make it." Some are first-timers playing in 2026 ahead of GTA VI; others are replaying a game they first owned on PS3 or PS4.
A smaller group, some of them people who had just replayed GTA IV or Red Dead Redemption 2, find the plot thinner and the characters cartoonish. One wrote "Franklin is an absolute empty shell", and another summed up a full playthrough with "I had fun, but I didn't care that much." Several also call the campaign linear, with scripted missions that leave little room to improvise.
Enhanced looks and runs betterHigh
438 reviews talk about graphics, ray tracing, DLSS, frame rates or how smoothly the game runs. Players single out the lighting and reflections, faster load times, frame generation and DualSense support, and several are surprised by how well it runs on laptops and older cards. One says it "runs on a 4gb graphics card very well on high preset". Another reviewer summed up the upgrade: "It's GTA5 with most of the rough edges cleaned up."
Fewer reviewers raise problems: TAA blur and ghosting, sky and cloud flickering that players say has gone unfixed for months, frame drops in dense foliage, and crashes on some AMD cards. A few describe blue screens, and one says a crash corrupted Windows or their boot drive. Some players also feel the visual jump over Legacy is small unless ray tracing is switched on.
Los Santos as a sandbox you keep coming back toMedium
237 reviews praise the open world, the freedom or the chaos you can cause. People describe driving at sunset with the radio on, starting a police chase for no reason, or exploring with the minimap off. Nostalgia runs through these reviews: players who grew up with the game, who bought it on three or four platforms, or who finally got to play it after watching it on YouTube as kids. GTA VI comes up in 439 reviews, often from players treating this as a last visit to Los Santos before the sequel.
Online with a crew of friendsMedium
308 reviews mention friends, siblings or "the boys". Heists, races and messing around in invite-only sessions with people they know keep these players coming back, and one tip that comes up is to skip public lobbies: "Online is fun with friends but if you're solo it's better to play the story multiple times." Some returning players found Online better than they remembered, pointing to more solo-friendly businesses and the starting money: "Online is unexpectedly fun."
Where players are split
GTA Online as a wholeHigh
839 reviews mention Online. 383 of them also discuss the story, and those often give a two-part verdict: "Story mode is peak, online is if you like grinding and want to suffer". Fans point to years of free updates, a huge amount of content, businesses and heists that are fun with a set crew, and no paid subscription needed to play online on PC. Critics describe a mode that confuses newcomers, runs on repetitive sell missions, is full of phone-call spam and loading screens, and is hard to enjoy alone because many heists need four players. Reviewers who mention thousands of hours turn up on both sides: some still log in daily, others write that they have finally quit.
Enhanced versus LegacyMedium
163 reviews mention Legacy. The case for Enhanced is better visuals, faster loading, a smaller install, Hao's Special Works cars and smoother Online menus, and several Legacy veterans call it a clear upgrade. The case against is a list of things Enhanced took away or broke: no PC text chat, a one-time Online migration that failed or was unavailable for some ("account is not eligible for migration at this time"), forced BattlEye, new bugs Legacy never had, and weaker mod support ("most mods do not support enhanced all that well"). Some advise staying on Legacy if your PC is weak or you mod heavily.
How it compares with GTA IV and San AndreasLow
76 reviews bring up the older games, and their fans keep returning to the same points: arcade driving, light car damage and toned-down ragdolls after GTA IV ("the driving physics are still a massive downgrade compared to GTA 4"), few enterable interiors, and a big but empty countryside next to San Andreas. Others who replayed IV first came away preferring V's missions and pacing.
Keyboard, mouse and flyingLow
A small but consistent group finds the PC controls awkward: numpad flight controls, aircraft that are "nearly impossible w keyboard and mouse", rebinding errors and clunky menus. Their usual fix is a controller for flying.
What frustrates players
Heist nerfs and the Online grindHigh
The Online economy is the largest group of complaints in the negative reviews. 17% of them (218) attack grinding for multi-million-dollar properties, Shark Cards, pay-to-win vehicles and the GTA+ subscription, and the payout cuts that reviewers tie to the Kortz Center update made it worse. 145 reviews mention nerfs, payouts or the Kortz Center, and 113 of those were written between July and September 2026. Players say every older heist lost a large part of its payout, repeat runs within a week pay far less, and the new heist needs a mansion costing well over 10 million before you can start: "Cayo Perico doesn't even pay $1M anymore; Kortz Centre their brand new heist only pays $1M+ once a week now." Crews were also annoyed that the Kortz Center payout "goes to the person who is HOSTING the heist" with no way to split it. The nerfs also turn up as a passing grumble in some otherwise happy reviews.
Cheaters and modders in public lobbiesHigh
13% of negative reviews (169) are about cheaters. Players describe god-mode players, lobbies blown up again and again, crashed or kicked sessions, heists ruined mid-finale, and accounts banned or reset after a hacker got into their lobby. Several say BattlEye, the kernel-level anti-cheat added for Enhanced, hasn't stopped it, and one wrote that "cheaters somehow have more power over the session than the developers do". Opinions differ on degree: a few players say Enhanced has fewer cheaters than Legacy, and invite-only sessions are the standard workaround.
Getting the game to run: launcher, account and crashesHigh
15% of negative reviews (194) are about getting into the game rather than playing it. About half of these involve the Rockstar Games Launcher and account system: verification emails sent to addresses players no longer have or never recognised ("Rockstar launcher wants to verify my email. The email is one I don't recognise."), Steam accounts permanently tied to a lost Rockstar account, sign-in loops, and story mode refusing to start offline without activation. The rest are crashes and launch failures: ERR_GFX errors, "game is already running" messages, freezes on the loading screen and random BattlEye kicks from Online. Some come from players with almost no playtime, a few of whom refunded. Players who contacted Rockstar support describe template replies, bot-like answers and closed tickets.
Long-standing bugsMedium
11% of negative reviews (138) describe bugs, often ones players say have existed for years: the Diamond Casino mantrap disconnect, Cayo Perico guards seeing through walls, "transaction failed" errors that void a heist payout, vehicles disappearing, soft locks during missions and an unresolved sky flicker. Several describe losing an hour-long heist run to one of these, and some note that money exploits get patched quickly while these bugs stay.
Linux and Steam Deck locked out of OnlineMedium
6% of negative reviews (80) are about BattlEye or Linux and Steam Deck support, and Linux and Steam Deck players are the core of it. Story mode runs well through Proton for most of them, but Online won't start. Reviewers say BattlEye's Proton support has not been switched on for the game and point out that it is an opt-in: "Battle eye anti cheat not implemented to support linux, so online does not work as intended." Windows players add a related objection: having to install a kernel-level anti-cheat to play a single-player campaign.
Griefers and the Oppressor Mk IIMedium
113 reviews bring up griefing or the Oppressor Mk II, the flying rocket bike, and some of those mentions are jokes, like this one from a positive review: "a 12 year old on an Oppressor Mk II will ruin your 40 minute sell mission and feel nothing." The complaint behind the jokes is that slow, solo sell missions are easy prey in public sessions and that the counters to these vehicles also cost millions.
Australia lost the casinoLow
57 reviews mention the casino being blocked for Australian players, including the daily Lucky Wheel spin. Most were written between 28 and 31 July 2026, when players say the change landed. They point to the game's R18+ rating and say they lost features, prize cars and a GTA+ perk they paid for: "Can't even do the daily wheel spin without a vpn."
Text chat removed from PC OnlineLow
45 reviews object that Enhanced dropped the public and organisation text chat Legacy had, leaving voice chat or the in-game phone: "Text chat removed in the Online mode. For a supposed upgrade this is inexcusable." A few said they went back to Legacy for this reason alone.
Story mode left behindLow
A handful of reviews regret that Story Mode never got the single-player DLC fans expected and that Online's cars, properties and features never came offline: "It's also a shame that Story Mode never received the single-player DLC that many fans were hoping for".
3. The player conversation
Most reviews are one-liners, and almost all of those are positive: "it's GTA", "peak", "best game ever", plus a running joke that the strip club is a shoe store. The longer reviews carry the argument, and they split along the line between the campaign and Online. People who bought it for the story, including first-time players catching up before GTA VI, write happy, often nostalgic reviews. The angry reviews about payouts, cheaters and bugs often come from returning Online veterans with hundreds or thousands of hours across Legacy, console and Enhanced. A third group with almost no playtime never got past the launcher, an account verification screen or BattlEye, and their reviews are about that alone. Linux and Steam Deck owners are a smaller fourth group with one consistent complaint.
The tone shifted with events. The March 2025 launch was rough (59% positive across 83 reviews in launch week, 45% across 29 the week after), with complaints about migration, crashes and missing chat. The week of 13 July 2026, as complaints about the Kortz Center payout cuts picked up, was the lowest of the summer at 51% (37 reviews), and the Australian casino block added a burst of negative reviews at the end of that month. Review volume in this slice then jumps, with reviewers mentioning a sale or GTA VI, and the positive share climbed: 84% in the week of 27 July, then between 86% and 93% every week from August to mid-October 2026. Nerf complaints kept arriving through August and September.
4. What the developers could do
- Restore heist payouts or rebalance the July 2026 cuts. The Online economy is the largest group of complaints in the negative reviews, and players ask for Cayo Perico and the older heists to pay what they did before, plus a way to split the Kortz Center payout among the crew.
- Fix Rockstar account recovery and let Steam owners play without the verification trap. Players locked out by old or unknown email addresses describe support that answers with templates or closes tickets, and several ask that story mode at least start offline without activation.
- Make the anti-cheat actually stop lobby-crashing and god-mode menus, and review bans by hand. Cheaters in public sessions are the third-largest group of complaints in the negative reviews, and a few players who were banned or reset after a hacker got into their lobby, or banned over voice chat, say their appeals went nowhere.
- Fix the heist-breaking bugs players have reported for years. The Diamond Casino mantrap, "transaction failed" payouts, Cayo Perico detection and the sky flicker keep coming up, often from players who lost a long run.
- Enable BattlEye's Proton support and keep it out of Story Mode. Linux and Steam Deck players can run the campaign but not Online, and Windows players object to kernel-level anti-cheat for a single-player game.
- Bring back text chat on PC. Reviewers call its removal a downgrade from Legacy and say it cut Online's social side.
- Give solo players protection from weaponised vehicles during sell missions. Reviewers name the Oppressor Mk II and homing weapons when they describe griefing in public lobbies, and want sales they can finish without a crew.
- Offer Australian adults an age check to restore the casino. Reviewers note the game is R18+ and ask for a verification route back to the Lucky Wheel and table games they had used for years.
