What players are actually saying

Nostalgic Disney adventures with great music and a superb KH2, held back by a crash-prone PC port that can wipe out progress.

87% positive on Steam · 13,182 reviews

1. Summary

The praise is about the games themselves. Reviewers write about childhood memories, the odd mix of Disney worlds and Final Fantasy characters, a story they call both moving and baffling, and Yoko Shimomura's music. Kingdom Hearts II gets singled out for combat that holds up and for hard modes and superbosses that veterans still play. Some buyers write that they waited years for the games to reach Steam after their time on the Epic Games Store, and Steam Deck owners report that the collection runs well in handheld mode. Opinion splits over the weaker entries: Chain of Memories' card combat, Birth by Sleep's three-campaign structure, and 358/2 Days and Re:coded being cutscene movies with no gameplay. The first game's camera and older design also divide people who come to it without nostalgia.

Most of the frustration is with the PC port. 13% of all reviews mention crashing, and 57% of negative reviews do. Players describe crashes on saving, at area transitions and in cutscenes, and since the games only save at save points, a crash can cost a lot of progress. Reviews from June and July 2024 describe Radeon RX 7000 cards and AMD handhelds that could barely run the games at all; from August 2024, reviewers report that a new AMD driver fixed most of that. Crash reports kept coming afterwards, appearing in more than four in ten negative reviews in every later period. Smaller complaints cover cutscenes locked to 30 fps, AI-upscaled textures, audio glitches and lost or corrupted saves.

2. What keeps coming up

What players praise
Nostalgia and a childhood favorite on PCHigh

Childhood, growing up with the series or plain nostalgia come up in 11% of reviews. Players describe buying the series again on another platform to relive the PS2 years, sometimes to share it with their kids. Some returning players found more in it than they remembered: "Coming back to Kingdom Hearts 1 after playing it as a kid, I was surprised by how much more depth the game has than I remembered." A smaller group of players without that nostalgia push back, saying the games only work if you grew up with them (see the split on aged design below). About 1% of reviews come from self-described newcomers, and some of them write that they finally understand the series' following.

Story, characters and emotional payoffHigh

About 9% of reviews mention the story, plot or lore, and a smaller share name characters like Sora, Riku, Roxas and Aqua. Players call the stories emotional, say they cried at Kingdom Hearts II and 358/2 Days, and praise the themes of friendship. A running joke is that the plot is a tangle: 2% use words like "convoluted", "confusing" or "makes no sense", often with affection. One player described the attitude: you say the story makes no sense "and then immediately spend another 80 hours trying to understand it anyway." For a small group of negative reviewers, the Disney-world filler and the tangled plot are reasons they gave up.

The Disney and Final Fantasy crossoverMedium

Disney or Final Fantasy come up in 6% of reviews, usually as a draw: visiting Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy, fighting beside or against Cloud, Leon and Sephiroth. A few critics find the Disney worlds repetitive or say they slow down the main story, especially in Birth by Sleep, where each of the three characters revisits the same worlds.

Music and soundtrackMedium

The music comes up in 4.5% of reviews, usually as praise, either by song ("Simple and Clean", "Dearly Beloved", "Sanctuary") or by naming Yoko Shimomura. One reviewer put it this way: "The combat is simple but satisfying, the Disney worlds are full of nostalgia, and the soundtrack still goes unbelievably hard."

A lot of game for the moneyMedium

Value comes up in 3.6% of reviews: four full games with hundreds of hours of content in one bundle. Players who mention price often advise buying on sale (2.4% of reviews), and a few call full price too much for PS2 and PSP-era games. Some KH2 fans say that one game justifies the price: "Kingdom Hearts 2 alone holds such a special place in my heart and I consider to be worth the full price of this bundle".

Steam Deck playMedium

The 3.6% of reviews that mention the Steam Deck mostly report good results: smooth performance, good battery life and few crashes, and some who had trouble on Windows say the Deck ran the games better. "Steam Deck: virtually flawless, works out of the box." The main exception is crackling audio on the Deck, which made at least one reviewer refund. AMD-based handhelds such as the ROG Ally and Legion Go got a much rougher reception (see the frustrations below).

Kingdom Hearts II and its combatMedium

2.6% of reviews single out Kingdom Hearts II as the best game in the collection or one of their favorite games ever, and another group praises the combat in general as fun, fluid and deeper than button-mashing. Veterans point to Critical Mode and KH2's superbosses as the place the combat shines: "Play critical on II, that's where the real fun is if you want a good challenge."

Finally on SteamLow

Some 2% of reviews celebrate the series arriving on Steam, which reviewers describe as a long wait while the games were on the Epic Games Store. "I've waited 22 years for this to come to PC. No, Epic doesn't count!" Several crash reports add that the same problems existed in the Epic version and were never fixed (see crashes below).

Mods and community fixesLow

Mods such as Re:Fined, OpenKH tools, texture restorations and randomizers come up in 2% of reviews. Fans see the PC release as a chance to mod the games, and players with crashes also use community fixes to make them run.

Where players are split
Re:Chain of Memories and its card combatMedium

Chain of Memories comes up in 5% of reviews, more often among players with long playtimes. Its critics call the card battle system tedious, frustrating or the worst game in the series, and some skipped it to watch the story on YouTube. Its defenders say the system has depth once it clicks: "Re:Chain of Memories mixes things up quite a bit, personally I strongly enjoyed myself playing it but I'd be a liar if I said it was for everybody." Others land in between: "The card mechanic is interesting, but gets old quickly." A few longtime fans also dislike that the 3D remake replaced the original GBA pixel art.

Birth by SleepMedium

Birth by Sleep is mentioned in 5% of reviews. Fans praise its lore and call it underrated. Others find replaying similar worlds with three characters tiring, and completionists complain about its minigames: "Toughest game to 100% in the collection too many mini-games and content that you need to do across 3 characters." It also draws its own technical complaints, including infinite loading screens on area changes: "i can barely make it 30 minutes through Birth By Sleep without an infinite loading screen making my lose hours of progress is inexcusable."

Aged design, camera and controlsMedium

How the games have aged, or the camera, comes up in 4.4% of reviews, and opinion splits. Some say the games hold up or are timeless. Others, often newcomers, find Kingdom Hearts 1 clunky: a camera that fights the player, unreliable lock-on, platforming, backtracking and not knowing where to go next. "Kingdom Hearts 1 has one of the worst camera and overall control schemes of any game I have ever played." Even fans concede the point: "The camera occasionally fights harder than the bosses". Several reviewers say KH2 fixes most of these complaints. A handful of players report motion sickness in the first game.

358/2 Days and Re:coded as moviesMedium

3.5% of reviews mention 358/2 Days or Re:coded, and 2% specifically point out that they are cutscene compilations with no gameplay. Several treat it as a buyer's note: the bundle holds four playable games, and the two movies are worth watching for the story. A smaller group is angry about it, especially fans of the original DS games: "It went from being an actual game, to an elongated cutscene." Some reviewers also note that watching the movies still requires button presses and reading text.

Difficulty and Final Mix bossesMedium

Difficulty is discussed in 3.2% of reviews. Veterans praise Proud and Critical modes, level 1 runs and superbosses like Sephiroth and the Lingering Will. Some newer players hit walls at specific bosses (Clayton, Ursula, the first game's final fights) or object that Final Mix bosses spike in the main story: "Sometimes is very easy and sometimes very HARD." Others answer that standard mode is fine and nobody needs to play on the hardest setting.

Grind and 100% completionMedium

Grinding, platinum and 100% runs come up in 3.2% of reviews, mostly from long-time players. Some enjoy the hunt. Others complain about luck-based minigames and achievements, like Birth by Sleep's Command Board and KH2's Mushroom XIII, and about late-game farming.

What frustrates players
Crashes and lost progressHigh

13% of all reviews mention crashing, as do 57% of negative reviews. Reports cluster around a few moments: using a save point in Kingdom Hearts 1, moving between areas or worlds, KH2's switches between gameplay and pre-rendered cutscenes, and alt-tabbing. Because the games only save at save points, a crash can cost bosses and long cutscenes: "the 1st game has a tendency to crash... WHEN I TRY TO SAVE." Players also warn that the problems can appear late: "They may not become apparent until you're well past the refund window." In launch month, 24% of all reviews mentioned crashing. From September 2024 on that dropped to about 5 to 8% of reviews, but the share among negative reviews stayed between 41% and 48% in every later period. Some players found workarounds (capping the frame rate at 60, turning off the refresh-rate setting or v-sync, borderless or fullscreen mode, community patches), while others say nothing helped. Positive reviews mention crashes too (6% of them), usually as a warning next to a recommendation. Several reviewers point out that the same problems existed in the Epic version.

AMD graphics cards and AMD handhelds at launchMedium

AMD hardware is named in 3.7% of reviews and 16% of negative ones. In launch month, about a quarter of negative reviews named it: Radeon RX 7000 cards and AMD handhelds such as the ROG Ally and Legion Go crashed within minutes, often in the KH1 tutorial or on Destiny Islands. "Hasnt fixed AMD issues that have been around since the Epic Release". From August 2024, reviewers report that a new AMD driver resolved most of it: "Newest AMD driver has finally fixed all issues on RDNA3 gpus." After that, AMD mentions fall to under 5% of negative reviews, though isolated handheld owners still report crashes.

Performance, stutter and 30 fps cutscenesLow

Stutter, frame drops, input lag or frame pacing come up in about 2% of reviews, and a smaller group complains about cutscenes. Players note that the pre-rendered scenes play at 30 fps regardless of settings ("cutscenes play at 30 FPS no matter what your refresh rate is set to"), stutter or fall out of sync with the audio. Some players with strong PCs report drops in specific places, like KH2's superboss hub.

Corrupted and lost savesLow

1.9% of reviews describe corrupted saves, "Save data is corrupt" messages, or saves missing after an uninstall or cloud sync. Some players hit corruption on the first boot. Since the games only save at save points, a lost file can mean a long stretch of play to redo, and these reviews are angry about it.

AI-upscaled texturesLow

The upscaled textures come up in 1% of reviews, mostly critically. Players say faces, Namine's drawings and in-game text look smeared, and they want an option for the original textures. "There's mods to restore the original textures on Nexus Mods but this shouldn't be something that requires a fix in the first place."

Audio glitchesLow

Just under 1% of reviews report audio problems: crackling on the Steam Deck, sound cutting out or spiking in volume when many enemies are hit, and missing voice lines. "Bought to play on Steam Deck but the audio is crackly and I actually refunded it over this issue".

Gummi Ship sectionsLow

Under 1% of reviews mention the Gummi Ship, often as the weakest part of the first two games, with clunky building and dull flight sections. "Only downside is the gummy missions. Those mechanics feel old and clunky."

Keyboard, controller and display optionsLow

Small groups raise control and display issues. Keyboard and mouse players call the controls workable but awkward ("Keyboard/Mouse controls are functional, but this is the game that finally made me get a controller."). Controller players report lost input after alt-tabbing, a deformed menu after saving with a controller, and no controller remapping. A few others ask for ultrawide support, a wider field of view, skippable intro logos and a smaller install.

3. The player conversation

Many positive reviews are a single word or line ("peak", "goat", song lyrics, "get on the hydras back"), and the longer ones often rank each game in the bundle with a score. Most negative reviews are about the port: 66% of them mention crashes, freezes, stutter, audio bugs, corrupted saves or a bad port. Several come from fans of the games, like the player who wrote "Good games, god awful ports." Other negative reviews target the design: Kingdom Hearts 1 feels clunky, the camera hostile, Chain of Memories tedious or the story silly.

Who raises what differs by playtime. Reviewers with under 2 hours raise technical failures far more than anyone else: 26% of them mention crashing, against 9 to 13% in the longer playtime groups, and 16% name AMD hardware, mostly from the launch period. Players with 50 or more hours write about the individual games: 11% mention Chain of Memories, 11% Birth by Sleep, 8% the 358/2 Days and Re:coded movies, plus difficulty modes, superbosses and 100% completion. Crash reports still appear among those long-haul players (9% of them), usually tied to lost progress deep into a run.

The positive share was 78% in launch month and 82% in July and August 2024, when the AMD crashes were at their worst. It rose to about 95% for the rest of 2024, helped by the November burst below, and settled around 90% through 2025 and 2026. A burst of short, almost uniformly positive reviews arrived in the last week of November 2024 (99% positive that week), and a wave of new reviews in mid-August 2026 briefly brought one week down to 79%, with crash reports again common among that week's negative reviews.

4. What the developers could do

  1. Fix the remaining crashes at save points, area transitions and cutscene switches. Crashing appears in 57% of negative reviews and in more than four in ten negatives in every period since reviewers reported the AMD driver fix, with KH1 save points, KH2 cutscene transitions and Birth by Sleep loading screens among the crash points players name.
  2. Protect progress from crashes and corruption. Players losing hours to a crash or a "Save data is corrupt" message tie their anger to the save-point-only design, so backup save slots, save integrity checks and reliable cloud sync would limit what each remaining crash costs.
  3. Unlock or smooth out the pre-rendered cutscenes. Reviewers complain that cutscenes are stuck at 30 fps, stutter or desync from the audio, and KH2's switches between gameplay and cutscenes are a named crash point.
  4. State clearly on the store page that 358/2 Days and Re:coded are movies. Some players warn that the bundle holds four playable games, not six, and a few reviews call the listing misleading or a scam.
  5. Add an option to use the original textures. Critics of the AI-upscaled textures say they spoil the art style and that they need Nexus mods to restore what they expected by default.
  6. Fix Steam Deck audio crackle and the combat volume dips. Deck owners otherwise praise the collection on handheld, and the crackling drove at least one of them to refund.
  7. Improve input handling and display options. Lost controller input after alt-tabbing, menu glitches with a controller, no controller remapping, awkward keyboard controls, and requests for ultrawide, field of view and skippable logos each come up in small but repeated groups.
