Resident Evil Village

Capcom Development Division 1 · Shooter, Horror, Action

Overview

Resident Evil Village is a first-person survival horror game and the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game maintains elements from previous Resident Evil games, with players having to scavenge environments for items and manage their resources. However, it adds more action-oriented gameplay, with higher enemy counts and a greater emphasis on combat.

What players are actually saying

GameQ verdict: Essential

A beautiful gothic setting, memorable villains and an emotional father's story, with lighter scares and a linear, cutscene-heavy path.

96% positive on Steam · 155,734 reviews

1. Summary

95% of the reviews recommend Resident Evil Village. The praise goes to Ethan Winters' story as a father searching for his daughter, the gothic look of the village and its castle, and a cast of villains led by Lady Dimitrescu. 13% of longer reviews praise the story in plain words, against about 2% that call it weak or nonsensical. House Beneviento is the section players single out as frightening, and 8% of longer reviews talk about replaying for upgrades, unlockables and Mercenaries mode.

Players argue about what kind of Resident Evil this is. 10% of longer reviews discuss its shift from horror toward action: some call the mix ideal, while players who wanted Resident Evil 7's dread miss it. Boss fights, puzzles, the Shadows of Rose expansion, Chris Redfield's role and the stretch after the castle also divide opinion. Outright complaints come from a minority. In negative longer reviews, 19% object to a linear, cutscene-heavy structure with yellow paint marking the way. Smaller groups raise a fixed field of view that makes some players motion sick, sluggish movement and weak hit feedback, and PC problems such as a visible mouse cursor, crashes and lost saves.

2. What keeps coming up

What players praise
Ethan's story, the father theme and the endingHigh

The story comes up in 45% of longer reviews, and the tone is mostly warm: 13% praise it outright and 8% speak well of Ethan himself. Players who found him a blank slate in Resident Evil 7 say he has more personality here: "This time, however, Ethan is much more expressive and actually reacts to the insane things happening around him." Reviewers respond to the father-and-daughter premise. One who came to the series on a friend's suggestion expected mostly gameplay and boss fights and wrote instead: "This game and its prequel showed a story of a loving family from beginning to end". Words like cried, tears or emotional turn up in 6% of longer reviews, often about the ending. Short reviews lean on Ethan too: 9% are about him, usually as "best dad" praise. Players who say the plot doesn't hold together are covered under the writing item below.

Visuals, atmosphere and a varied gothic settingHigh

Players describe a snowy village, a lavish castle and later areas that each have their own look: "Resident Evil Village is honestly gorgeous to look at." The graphics come up in 21% of longer reviews and the atmosphere or setting in 20%. Reviewers like the move from gothic castle halls to a creepy doll house, a reservoir and an industrial late game. A few find the later areas less striking than the castle.

Castle Dimitrescu and the villainsHigh

The castle or Lady Dimitrescu comes up in 16% of longer reviews, and the villains or Lords in 19%. Several reviewers name the castle as the high point: "I found myself ABSOLUTELY mesmerised by Castle Dimitrescu." Lady Dimitrescu is also the subject of 4% of the short reviews, mostly jokes about her height. The other Lords get credit as distinct characters with their own areas: "The rogues' gallery in this game is top-tier." The main criticism here is length, since some players feel the castle and its owner are over too soon (see the pacing item below).

House BenevientoMedium

House Beneviento or its dolls come up in 9% of longer reviews, and those that talk about fear often call it the scariest part of the game, sometimes of the whole series: "Donna Beneviento's part is unlike anything I've ever experienced across any game". Some players who otherwise say Village is not scary make an exception for it. A few negative reviewers dislike being stripped of weapons there, and one argues it doesn't belong in Resident Evil at all: "How is this crap related to any of the Resident Evil series' sci-fi or bioweapon themes?"

Weapons, upgrades and the DukeMedium

Players like the Resident Evil 4 style loop of finding treasure, selling it and upgrading guns, and 9% of longer reviews mention upgrades, the attaché case or the Duke's shop: "Gun upgrading being back is also a big plus for me." The Duke himself gets fond mentions: "This game is beautiful, and merchant is the best character." How the guns feel to shoot divides players more (see the frustrations below).

Replay value, unlocks and MercenariesMedium

Replaying, New Game+ or unlockables come up in 8% of longer reviews, and Mercenaries mode in 4%. Long-time players raise it most: 21% of written reviews from players past 25 hours bring up replays, the hardest difficulty, Mercenaries or achievements. "The replayability is insane with how the progression works game to game." Mercenaries fans like the score chasing: "This has my most favorite mini-game version of Mercenaries". The complaints are that some unlocks demand several runs, that a few Mercenaries maps are annoying, and that a bug sometimes stops inventory carrying into New Game+ (see the bugs item).

Runs well on most PCsLow

Reports of smooth performance include older graphics cards and Steam Deck, and 3% of longer reviews say the game is well optimized or runs smoothly: "this game is so insanely well optimized, it's crazy". One player credits a DRM change: "Well Optimized, almost no stuttering since the removal of Denuvo." A smaller group reports the reverse (see the crashes item below).

Where players are split
Boss fightsHigh

Bosses come up in 15% of longer reviews. Fans praise their variety and spectacle: "All 4 bosses and their levels were completely unique and different from the last." Critics say they are easy on the standard difficulty and lean on repeated patterns: "the boss fights could've been designed a little better as they're honestly more repetitive than challenging". On the hardest difficulty the complaint flips, and some players describe particular fights, the final boss among them, as walls that made them quit.

Horror against actionMedium

Reviewers measure Village against two earlier games: Resident Evil 7 is named in 29% of longer reviews and Resident Evil 4 in 18%. 10% discuss the shift from horror toward action, whether they call it less scary, more action-focused, or a good blend. Players who like the shift say it gets the mix right: "this game strikes the perfect balance between horror and action". Players who came for Resident Evil 7's dread miss it: "Where's the horror in my horror game?" A middle group holds both views: "Leans action over horror, which will disappoint purists, but the pacing never drags and it looks incredible." House Beneviento comes up on both sides as the exception.

Shadows of Rose and the paid expansionMedium

The DLC comes up in 12% of longer reviews, mostly the Shadows of Rose epilogue from the Winters' Expansion. Explicit praise outnumbers explicit criticism (about 2.5% of longer reviews against under 1%): "The bonus game Shadows of Rose was unexpectedly good too." Critics find it thin or predictable: "rose DLC was kind of cliche and boring, i would say just play the main campaign (in first person)". The sharper sore point is that the third-person camera comes with the paid expansion (see the frustrations below).

Writing, dialogue and Chris RedfieldMedium

Critics of the writing say Ethan narrates the obvious and quips constantly, side characters get little screen time, and the plot strains logic. Dialogue, voice acting, writing or plot holes come up in 6% of longer reviews and in 14% of negative longer reviews. Fans raise it as well, and one positive review warns that "the story and dialogue are shockingly weak and often undermine the experience." Chris Redfield is named in 9% of longer reviews, and his role draws pointed criticism, with players saying a short explanation from him would have avoided much of the conflict: "It feels more of a character assassination than something he would do in the events of the story." Others enjoy the B-movie tone and Chris's scenes.

PuzzlesMedium

Puzzles come up in 10% of longer reviews, with no settled view. Some call them trivial: "Any Puzzles are an insult to your intelligence". Others get stuck hunting for key items and backtracking: "The constant searching, puzzles, and backtracking were extremely tedious and frustrating." A third group finds them about right: "Some of the puzzles were a bit tricky to navigate, but I enjoyed every minute of it." A few negative reviews describe a castle bell puzzle as confusing or bugged.

Pacing after the castle and Heisenberg's factoryMedium

A strong first half that peaks at the castle and House Beneviento, followed by longer, combat-heavy areas, is how these reviews describe the pacing: "this game has a really strong start and then it derails a bit". 7% of longer reviews talk about the factory or about the game dragging or falling off later on. The factory itself splits players almost evenly in explicit judgments (1.2% of longer reviews praise it, 1.0% criticize it): "fun, except heisenburg's dumbass factory" against "The Factory is the best part of the game for me". Some players also feel the castle ends too quickly: "Lady D's area was underwhelmingly short".

Price, length and salesMedium

Sales and discounts come up in 6% of longer reviews, and 2% call the game short. Some call it good value even at full price: "39,99€ is a steal, but goes on sale often". Others, pointing to a campaign of about 10 to 12 hours, advise waiting: "The game is ~10h of actual gameplay so buy it only when heavily discounted (at least 70%)."

DifficultyLow

On the standard setting, the 2% of longer reviews that call the game easy describe it as one of the easier entries: "Not the scariest RE by any means, and probably the easiest one I've ever played." The higher settings, Hardcore and Village of Shadows, come up in 4%. On Hardcore, the opening village ambush is the flashpoint, and some players quit there: "The village attack of the intro on hardcore is a complete BS, even more than the intro village of RE4R." Others treat the hardest mode as the best reason to replay.

What frustrates players
A linear path, yellow paint and long cutscenesMedium

Linearity, hand-holding, yellow paint markers or heavy cutscenes come up in 5% of longer reviews and 19% of negative longer reviews. Players describe a slow, scripted opening, cutscenes that interrupt play, and objects painted to show the way: "Yellow paint everywhere and prompts holding your hand". Positive reviews raise it too: "the first hour is too curscene and script heavy kinda feels like a 1 hour movie before the actaul game starts". A few players add that the skip prompt takes several seconds to become active. Some defend the cinematic style and praise the cutscene quality.

Fixed field of view and motion sicknessLow

The narrow field of view, the missing FOV slider or motion sickness come up in 2% of longer reviews and 8% of negative longer reviews. Early reviews raise it most: 7% of written reviews from players under three hours mention it, against 1% from players past 25 hours. "very well made. just needs an fov slider in the actual game. like whats the point of not having one?" Several turn to mods. One player had put the game off for this reason: "I wasn't able to play it before due to the first person motion sickness it caused me, but thankfully this version arrived and I loved it". A few credit the expansion's third-person mode: "very thankful for a third-person POV option! it took me this long to play RE8 because first-person makes me really dizzy." Another says even third person "didn't completely solve this issue.".

Sluggish movement and weak hit feedbackLow

Slow, clunky movement or guns without impact come up in 3% of longer reviews and 9% of negative longer reviews. A positive review lists this among its cons: "Sluggish movement, it feels like you're walking in wet concrete." Enemies that barely react to hits or dodge around shots, the Lycans in particular, frustrate this group: "Why don't enemies react at all to being shot?" A few call the enemies bullet sponges on the higher difficulties. Other players call the gunplay satisfying, so this is a minority view.

Crashes, lost saves and other bugsLow

A small group (under 4% of longer reviews) reports technical faults: crashes or freezes at particular points, missing audio at launch, autosaves that skip recent progress, saves the game stops recognizing, and New Game+ inventory that doesn't carry over. "43 hours later and all my saves are just gone." Another player writes: "crash every few minutes. impossible to play without interruption"

PC controls, menus and display optionsLow

Keyboard and mouse handling, menus and display support draw complaints in 2% of longer reviews: a mouse cursor that shows during play, limited key rebinding, map controls on the middle mouse button, no quit to desktop from the pause menu, and trouble with 16:10 screens, multiple monitors and HDR. "Tired of seeing my mouse cursor spazzing across the screen when I'm playing on KBM."

Third-person mode sold with the paid expansionLow

About 1% of longer reviews object that the over-the-shoulder camera came with the paid Winters' Expansion instead of as a free option: "Having to pay 20$ for third person is diabolical." Because some players say third person is what lets them play without motion sickness, the paywall stings more for them.

DRMLow

A small group of 22 reviews objects to the game's DRM, most of them naming Enigma: "Remove Enigma DRM from your games." One positive review credits the earlier removal of Denuvo with smoother play.

3. The player conversation

The conversation is affectionate and often playful. Short reviews are mostly simple praise, "best dad" tributes to Ethan, and jokes about Lady Dimitrescu's height. The negative reviews are fewer but longer, and two groups stand out among them. Fans of Resident Evil 7 and the classic games measure Village against them and object to the action tilt, the linear structure and the writing. PC players who stopped early raise the field of view, motion sickness, launch problems and the scripted opening.

Reviews from players past 25 hours turn to replays, Village of Shadows, Mercenaries scores and achievements. Requiem (Resident Evil 9) is named in 6% of longer reviews, by players working through the series around it. Reviews written in 2026 recommend the game at about the same rate as the older reviews here (95% against 94%).

4. What the developers could do

  1. Add a field-of-view slider to the base game. It is the most direct fix for the motion sickness that 8% of negative longer reviews describe, and for the players who quit in their first hours because of it.
  2. Make the third-person camera free. Reviewers resent paying for a camera option that some of them need to play comfortably at all.
  3. Fix the save, autosave and New Game+ carry-over bugs and the reported crash points. Lost saves and missing New Game+ inventory hit the players who replay the game.
  4. Fix the PC input and display issues. Players ask for a hidden cursor during play, full key rebinding, map controls off the middle mouse button, quit to desktop, and proper 16:10, multi-monitor and HDR handling.
  5. Let players skip cutscenes instantly and move faster through the scripted opening. Linearity and cutscene complaints appear in 19% of negative longer reviews, and several mention the delayed skip prompt.
  6. Offer an option to turn off yellow paint and object highlights. Players who call the game hand-holding name the yellow markers specifically.
  7. Rebalance the Hardcore opening ambush. Players who start on Hardcore describe the first village fight as the point where they gave up or had to cheese it from a ladder.
