What players are actually saying
1. Summary
Reviewers describe Ready or Not as a slow, tense room-clearing shooter where every door is a gamble, set in a grim, carefully built world whose missions and hidden lore stay with people. Many call it the closest thing to a modern SWAT 4, praise the gunplay, the gear customization and the sound, and say it is at its best with a group of friends. Mods, including a VR mod, keep some long-time players coming back.
About a third of negative reviews bring up the AI. Squadmates block doorways, bounce flashbangs off the door frame and freeze under fire, while suspects spot players through tiny gaps, react instantly and soak up rounds. Other complaints cover bugs that break score runs, crashes that can wipe progress, shaky multiplayer connections and undisclosed AI-generated art. Players are split on the difficulty spikes, the non-lethal S-rank system, the price of the DLC, and the content that reviewers say was cut for the console release.
2. What keeps coming up
What players praise
Slow, tense tactical play that punishes rushingHigh
Reviewers like being made to slow down: checking corners, mirroring doors, stacking up and second-guessing every hallway, with careless entries punished. "If you think you cleared a room, you didn't, and there's someone in that closet." Some set it against arcade shooters such as Call of Duty, and many frame it as a spiritual successor to SWAT 4 and the older Rainbow Six games. One long review says it "makes your hands shake after narrowly surviving an engagement and coming down from the combat high of it." Not knowing who is armed, whether a civilian will comply or whether a door is trapped keeps runs feeling different. Some SWAT 4 veterans say the older game handled its squad and its pacing better, though several of them still recommend this one as the best modern option.
Best with friendsHigh
Hundreds of reviews mention playing with friends, and they describe coordinated breaches, shared panic and plenty of friendly-fire comedy. One review puts the gap bluntly: "10/10 with friends, 6/10 solo." This praise is tied to the AI complaints, since some reviewers recommend co-op specifically because the AI squad is unreliable in Commander mode. Some solo players still enjoy commanding the AI team and finish the whole campaign that way, but the usual advice is to bring people.
Atmosphere, dread and soundHigh
"it is the scariest game i have played that isn't meant to be a horror game," one review says, and others call it a horror game in all but name. Valley of the Dolls, Neon Tomb, Elephant and Twisted Nerve are among the missions named as the ones that stay with people. The sound design and the soundtrack get specific praise for building that unease. Some reviewers warn that the subject matter (trafficking, school shootings, drug abuse) is heavy enough that sensitive players should know what they are getting into, and a few find the constant escalation more shocking than believable.
Lore and environmental storytellingMedium
Fans of the story like that it is told through objects, notes, 911 calls and details that connect missions to each other, with no cutscenes doing the work. "The story is very interesting and so hidden that it's rewarding to understand it." A few say they only understood the plot after watching lore videos, which they count as a plus. Critics of the writing find it heavy-handed or edgy, and some found the story too easy to miss.
Mods, including VRMedium
Reviewers recommend AI rebalance packs, engine-tweak mods for stutter, extra maps and weapons, an uncensor mod, and the community VR mods, which several call a highlight. "Thankfully, the modding community has done an incredible job fixing a lot of these issues." Some resent needing mods to fix AI problems, and mods breaking with updates is a complaint of its own (covered under frustrations).
Gunplay and gear customizationMedium
"The gunplay is heavy and satisfying, and the atmosphere is genuinely intense." Weapon feel, sound and handling get regular praise, and players enjoy the armory, the attachments and dressing up their own officer and their AI squad. Complaints here are about damage rather than feel: several reviewers say smaller calibers feel weak and that the armor model is inconsistent.
Graphics and detailed mapsMedium
Many reviewers praise the visuals and the level of detail in each map, from lived-in houses to the police station between missions. Some long-time players say the graphics were downgraded around the console release; about half of those claims were written in the second half of 2025.
Where players are split
Performance on different PCsMedium
Performance reports go both ways. One group has steady frame rates on modest hardware, Steam Deck and Linux, with one review saying it "even runs on older, low spec pc's." Another reports stutter, frame drops in gunfights and long loads, sometimes on strong systems: "Its really poorly optimised though and runs like absolute garbage on my high mid range system." Some reviewers suggest DirectX 11 or engine-tweak mods as workarounds.
Price, sales and DLCMedium
Advice to buy on sale comes up often: "Wait for one of their frequent 50% sales, then definitely buy it." The DLC packs (Home Invasion, Dark Waters and Boiling Point, which reviewers say add three missions each) divide people. Some find them fair or excellent, with Boiling Point praised most often, and like that only the host needs to own a DLC for friends to play it. Others call the packs thin for the price: "Unless the DLC's are on super sale, I don't recommend them." A few dislike that some achievements need the DLC.
Content cut for the console releaseMedium
Censorship comes up in 14% of negative reviews, in complaints about the content changes that reviewers tie to the 2025 console release, and players with hundreds of hours raise it far more often than those with only a few. These reviewers say the edits to nudity, gore and the most disturbing scenes (the girl in Twisted Nerve and the Valley of the Dolls imagery come up by name) blunt the game's message, and some ask for the original content as an option on PC: "Give us the option for censorship." Others think the reaction was overblown: "That censorship update that put clothes on naked people ultimately did nothing to change the tone of the game unlike how some people overreacted." Several on both sides point to a mod that restores the original content.
Difficulty, Hard mode and the toughest missionsMedium
Whether the difficulty is fair is an open argument. Many like that the game is punishing and find Standard difficulty a good challenge. The complaints focus on Hard mode and on specific missions: Greased Palms, A New America, Relapse, Elephant, Hunger Strike and the Programmed Psychosis achievement are named as the points where the challenge turns into frustration. One detailed review sums up the gap between settings: "Hard feels unfair, while Standard feels too easy." Several reviewers recommend finishing everything on Standard and treating Hard as optional.
S ranks, non-lethal play and rules of engagementMedium
Some players love chasing S ranks and timed runs: "I love the ranking system and each run being timed, it helps me track the efficiency of each run." Others call the scoring the worst part of the game, because the top grade expects non-lethal arrests even in active-shooter missions, suspects can shrug off several beanbags, pepperballs and flashbangs, and some cosmetic rewards are locked behind S ranks. Penalties for unauthorized use of force against armed, non-compliant suspects draw particular frustration. Some reviewers settle on playing for A or B grades instead.
Officer stress and therapyLow
Some like that officers react to traumatic missions and need therapy. Others say the stress system mostly forces restarts or benching officers: "Singleplayer Crew Stress System Killed the game for me."
How much content there isLow
Randomized suspect, civilian and trap positions keep the missions replayable for dozens of hours, according to some reviewers. Others find the maps repetitive once learned and say there is little reason to return after finishing: "But once you've completed the main story and dlc missions, you don't have much reasons to come back to it."
What frustrates players
Suspects with superhuman aim, awareness and toughnessHigh
Negative reviews criticize the suspect AI about as often as the squad. Reviewers describe suspects who see through foliage, curtains and finger-width gaps, track players through walls, react near-instantly, shoot accurately while sprinting, and absorb rounds that should drop them. "a shirtless crackhead will snipe you with a glock from the other side of the map, and will not flinch at 10 bullets to the leg." Reviewers connect it with Hard mode and missions like Greased Palms and A New America, and usually call it unfair rather than difficult: "You play by rules the enemy doesnt follow. that is not fun." A smaller group defends the suspect AI as challenging and unpredictable, and some say mods fix it.
Teammate AI that blocks, misfires and ignores ordersHigh
Officers stand in doorways and ask the player to move, bounce grenades off the door frame or drop them at the team's feet, freeze or turn their backs while being shot, acknowledge orders and then ignore them, and try to secure evidence or make arrests mid-firefight. The same failures come up again and again. "Friendly AI is straight trash, from blocking your doorways to just standing in front of enemies letting them shoot and kill them without firing a single shot." This is why many reviewers say solo play falls short, and one review puts it this way: "Great game with friends, but solo players should know what they're buying." A minority find the squad fine on Standard difficulty and enjoy commanding it.
Bugs that break score runsHigh
Bugs appear in 15% of negative reviews, and many of the ones described block progress or a good grade: weapons and evidence falling through the floor, civilians stuck in walls or under furniture, suspects who stop reacting, restraints that will not work, and missions that never register as complete. "You will have weapons you need to collect for your score fall through the floor." Other reports include lasers that switch off, scopes missing after joining a game, and achievements that never unlock.
Clunky controls and missing quality-of-life optionsMedium
Reviewers ask for small fixes: restarting a mission without walking back through the police station ("you have to reload back into the police station and THEN back to the mission"), skipping the long score screen, faster movement or a sprint ("LET ME SPRINT IF THE SUSPECTS CAN!!!"), a separate taser keybind, and simpler door and command controls. Some new players found the tutorial and keybinds confusing.
Undisclosed AI-generated artMedium
Reviewers object to AI-generated posters, paintings and screens in missions such as 23 Megabytes a Second and Carriers of the Vine, and to the lack of a disclosure on the store page. "Does not disclose use of AI in game despite having it on posters and other art assets in game." It is a minority topic. Some of these reviews raise it alongside bugs or the AI, and others are a single line about the art.
Crashes and lost progressMedium
Crashes come up in about 6% of negative reviews, often at the worst moment, near the end of a long S-rank attempt or while hosting co-op. A smaller group lost their saves and unlocks after a crash, an update or a mod: "game kept crashing and the last time it did it wiped my saved game and i lost all my unlockables."
Multiplayer connections and matchmakingMedium
Co-op players report connection timeouts mid-mission, desync, high ping, failures to authenticate with Epic's services for crossplay, and the lack of a lobby browser. "Couldn't play with friends because I couldn't authenticate to Epic Servers." One reviewer counted that "Out of the 10 matches I played, 6 ended with either a Connection Timed Out or Host Closed the Lobby error while the match was already in progress."
Hunting the last civilian or piece of evidenceMedium
Some reviewers describe missions ending in a search for one hidden civilian, suspect or bomb on a large map, which they find tedious and, combined with bugs, sometimes endless. Some ask for an indicator for the last target, and a few want evidence collection removed from SWAT duties entirely: "Please remove evidence securing from SWAT tasks."
Mods breaking with every updateLow
Players who rely on mods say updates break them, sometimes leaving the game flagged as modded or crashing on start. "My only complaint; every time the game updates, even for a small patch, every single mod breaks." Some also wish mod.io mods worked as smoothly online as manually installed ones.
Public lobbiesLow
Players who queue with strangers describe silent lobbies, rushers and occasional teamkillers or kicks, and several advise playing with friends instead.
Missing features players ask forLow
A handful of reviews ask for a PvP mode, AI teammates to fill empty co-op slots, Steam Family Sharing support, and the removed mission modes and map variants from early access.
3. The player conversation
Most reviews are short endorsements, in-character jokes ("HE'S REACHING") and dark humor, while the negative reviews tend to be longer and more specific. Some negative reviewers say they love the game and are voting against the AI, the bugs or the content changes rather than the core experience, and a few say they would pick a neutral option if Steam offered one.
Newer players, many of whom say they have only just started, talk about tension, atmosphere, the lore and playing with friends, and their complaints are mostly about the squad AI and learning the controls. Long-time players, often with early-access history and hundreds of hours, carry the grievances about the console-era content changes, alleged graphics downgrades, removed maps and modes, and mods breaking. Players chasing S ranks, Hard mode and achievements describe the suspect AI, bullet-sponge enemies and score-blocking bugs in the most detail.
Reviews written in mid-2025, around the console release, were the most negative stretch in this slice, at 62% positive. Reviews written from June 2026 onward ran at 88% positive, and the weekly share held between 84% and 91% from June to October 2026. Complaints about AI-generated art grew in that period: two thirds of the reviews that mention it were written from June 2026 onward.
4. What the developers could do
- Fix the squad AI's movement, grenade use and order compliance. Solo players describe officers blocking doorways, bouncing flashbangs off door frames and ignoring orders under fire.
- Rebalance suspect perception, reaction time and damage resistance, starting with Hard mode. Reviewers accept a hard game but describe suspects who see through tiny gaps, react instantly and shrug off rounds and less-lethal hits as unfair.
- Fix the bugs that block scores and mission completion. Evidence and weapons falling through floors, civilians stuck in walls and suspects who stop responding ruin long S-rank runs.
- Stop crashes from wiping progress. Players lose long runs to crashes, and a smaller group lost their saves and unlocks entirely after a crash or update.
- Offer the pre-console content as an optional PC setting. Long-time players ask for a toggle rather than a permanent change, and some already restore it with a mod.
- Replace the AI-generated art or disclose it on the store page. Reviewers object both to the art and to the missing disclosure.
- Stabilize co-op connections and add a lobby browser. Co-op is what many reviewers recommend the game for, and timeouts, Epic authentication failures and blind matchmaking undercut it.
- Add quality-of-life shortcuts. Reviewers ask for a quick restart from inside a mission, a skippable score screen, help finding the last civilian or piece of evidence, and mods that survive updates.
