What players are actually saying
1. Summary
The maps get the most praise: they are big and detailed, and each one has several ways in. Players also like the slow-motion X-ray kill cam and the freedom to sneak, snipe or go loud. Axis Invasion, where another player can enter your campaign as an enemy sniper, is a favorite, and players with many hours in the game bring it up more than anyone. Co-op through the campaign and the Authentic difficulty get steady praise too.
Bugs and crashes are reported at every playtime. DLC pricing is the other frequent complaint: weapons, extra missions and the Hitler target mission sit behind season passes that reviewers call expensive next to a base game they bought cheaply. Series veterans who think Sniper Elite 4 had better maps and more use for the rifle describe this entry as a stealth game with a sniper attached. Others object to clunky movement, uneven enemy AI and a forgettable story. Most reviewers still recommend it, and a common piece of advice in those reviews is to wait for a sale.
2. What keeps coming up
What players praise
Big, layered maps with many ways inHigh
17% of the longer reviews talk warmly about the maps (huge, detailed, beautiful, open), and 11% mention the freedom to pick routes, entry points, order of objectives or play style. Reviewers compare the structure to Hitman, Metal Gear Solid V and Splinter Cell (9% of the longer reviews name one of those). One reviewer writes that "Each map is wide, layered, and packed with routes, vantage points, and little side objectives"; a shorter review says "the maps are massive and there are always many ways to approach and execute an objective." Players also replay missions from a different start point, at a higher difficulty or with a rule they set themselves. Some players think the same maps are too tight for sniping (see the split section).
Axis InvasionHigh
19% of the longer reviews mention Invasion, where a human player can join your campaign as a German sniper hunting you, and 10% describe it in plainly positive terms: tense, unique, their favorite mode. One short review reads "Axis invasion is the best thing invented since sliced bread" and a longer one calls it "a brilliant, nail-biting layer of tension to the standard PvE loop." Several players say invading other people's games is the part they enjoy most. A smaller group (2% of the longer reviews) complains about it: cheaters in invasions, campers and invaders who end their run. One negative reviewer, who found the game hard enough without another player hunting them, writes "I turned it off after my first encounter." Hosts can switch it off, and some recommend doing that on a first playthrough.
The X-ray kill camHigh
12% of the longer reviews bring up the slow-motion bullet cam, the X-ray organ shots or the series' notorious testicle shots, almost always as a highlight. "The X-Ray kill cam looks amazing," one player writes. A minority finds it wears thin ("Love the slow-motion shot, but it gets lowkey annoying pretty fast") or interrupts firefights, and a few series veterans think the X-ray effects looked better in Sniper Elite 4. Players who dislike it point out that it can be turned off.
Visuals and sceneryHigh
11% of the longer reviews praise how the game looks: the French countryside, the chateaux and towns, the lighting and the weapon models. "Breathtaking locations," one review says. Several players add that it runs well on modest hardware and on the Steam Deck. A smaller group thinks the engine looks dated next to 2022 releases; one reviewer who otherwise likes the game writes "Needs a new engine and graphical overhaul."
Co-op campaign and SurvivalMedium
8% of the longer reviews bring up co-op, nearly always positively. Players run the whole campaign with a friend, partner or sibling and like splitting up to flank objectives: "Love playing the co-op campaign with my wife." Survival mode comes up less (4% of the longer reviews), mostly as a fun extra. Co-op connection trouble is covered under online problems below.
Difficulty options and Authentic modeMedium
9% of the longer reviews discuss difficulty, and most of that is praise for how adjustable it is. Players who want the full challenge single out Authentic: "play it on authentic difficulty guys, it's so much more rewarding and intense." Some newer players say the game is hard even on lower settings because alerts escalate quickly. A few veterans think Authentic is easier than the top difficulty in Sniper Elite 4.
Where players are split
Sniper Elite 4 or Sniper Elite 5High
23% of the longer reviews mention Sniper Elite 4. 9% say 4 was better or call 5 a downgrade or step back, while 2% say 5 improves on it, and 7% describe 5 as more of the same. For some of that last group, more of the same is the appeal ("It's like Sniper Elite 4, but it's the 5th one"); for others it means nothing new. The complaints are specific: tighter maps with fewer long sightlines, removed features such as crouch-running, trip mines and the old weapon system, and controls that feel different. Players who prefer 5 point to better movement, more weapon customization and the Invasion mode. One review puts both sides in one line: "Mechanically feels better than 4, but suffers from worse levels than 4." Another is blunter: "Just get Sniper Elite 4, somehow it does almost everything better than this game."
Players say wait for a saleHigh
17% of the longer reviews talk about price, sales or discounts. Many of these reviewers bought it heavily discounted and are happy with the purchase, and a number add that they would not pay full price: "It was good. not worth full price get it on sale." Reviewers who paid more are harsher, pointing to a nine-mission campaign with DLC on top. A related, smaller complaint (1% of the longer reviews) is that the campaign is short.
Stealth game first, sniper game secondMedium
4% of the longer reviews say the rifle takes a back seat: maps push you into buildings, trenches and streets, an unsilenced rifle shot alerts the area, and the silenced pistol or an SMG becomes the main tool. Nicknames like "Pistol Elite" and "Welrod Elite" turn up in reviews of every length. "Why so little sniper gameplay in this sniper game??" one player asks; another says "the last campaign mission was the only time i actually had to snipe and it lasted less than a minute." Other players like exactly this shift and treat the game as a WWII stealth sandbox.
What frustrates players
Bugs, crashes and launch failuresHigh
14% of the longer reviews mention bugs, glitches or crashes. Technical reports include "GPU device was lost" errors, crashes under DX12 ("Game keep crashing with DX12, with Vulkan it not even boot."), the game failing to start, freezes on exit, and blue screens some reviewers blame on the anti-cheat. In-mission bugs include missing quest items, corpses that clip into the ground, broken health pickups and autosaves that roll back too far. A handful report lost save progress. The share of longer reviews raising these problems falls over time, from 31% of those written in 2022 to 10% of those written in 2026 (the 2022 group in this slice is small), and some returning players say patches fixed what blocked them.
DLC and season pass pricingHigh
9% of the longer reviews complain about DLC: the number of season passes, prices that rival or exceed the base game, and content they feel was cut to be sold back. They name guns locked to passes, achievements tied to DLC maps, and the mission where you assassinate Hitler being paid content. One player who otherwise calls it a great game gives it a thumbs-down for this reason: "Mosin nagant is locked behind season pass 2. That is why." Another writes "Please make games and not DLC festivals." These complaints come mostly from players with many hours in the game and rarely from those who quit early. A smaller group (4% of the longer reviews) says the DLC missions are worth buying, especially on sale.
Clunky movement, controls and invisible wallsMedium
9% of the longer reviews complain about how Karl moves and interacts: clunky or floaty movement, no crouch-run, sticky ladders and ledges, a shared key for using and throwing items, and fiddly looting. "The controls are extremely clunky (not ported from console to PC well)," one reviewer writes. 3% of the longer reviews name invisible walls or out-of-bounds zones that block an obvious sniping perch. Some players say they got used to it after a few hours.
Online problems: cheaters, disconnects, anti-cheat and the Epic promptMedium
6% of the longer reviews raise problems with the online side. They report cheaters in Invasion and PvP ("Great game. But Multiplayer is riddled with cheaters."), co-op partners dropping with error codes, kernel-level anti-cheat and Denuvo, and an Epic Games account page that opens in the browser at launch: "Every time I launch this game it pops up an Epic Games web page, even though I have cross play disabled." A few players say the anti-cheat blocked them from multiplayer, or that they were banned after reports for cheating they say they did not do. These issues come up most among players with the most hours.
Weak story and voice workMedium
4% of the longer reviews call the story, dialogue or characters weak, generic or cringeworthy, against under 2% that praise the story. Karl's constant narration and the voice acting draw the specific jabs: "Do yourself a favor and mute the voicework." A few reviewers say they skip the cutscenes and play for the missions. One player lists the story among the faults and still enjoys the rest: "Characters are abysmal and the invasions have cheaters but the game goes hard otherwise."
Enemy AIMedium
4% of the longer reviews criticize the AI, and the complaints pull in two directions. Some find guards dumb and easy to exploit; others say the moment one soldier spots you, the whole area knows where you are: "If you are seen by one guy, all the others instantly react as if they all have telepathy." Players also mention enemies spawning behind cleared routes and noise distractions that rarely work. A small number praise the AI for flanking and helping wounded comrades.
A short campaign and an abrupt final missionLow
A small set of reviews says the base campaign is short. The final mission draws complaints in reviews long and short ("good game but last mission is poo poo"): it ends abruptly and gives you little to do.
Download and patch sizeLow
A few reviews object to the install size and to patches that redownload most of the game: "You need to download the entire game for every small patch."
3. The player conversation
Plenty of the short positive reviews are one-line jokes about killing Nazis. The longer reviews are more measured, and many that recommend the game attach a caveat: buy it on sale, skip the DLC they call overpriced, or know that 4 was better. No single grievance drives the negative reviews. They split among series veterans who wanted more sniping, players who could not get the game to run, and people put off by the DLC model.
Bug and crash reports show up at a similar rate across playtimes, as do comparisons with Sniper Elite 4. Invasion is different: it comes up far more in reviews from players with many hours than from those who stopped early, and those long-time players are also the ones most likely to raise cheaters and the anti-cheat. DLC pricing follows the same pattern.
DLC pricing complaints dropped from 12-13% of longer reviews in 2022 and 2023 to 6% in 2026, alongside the fall in bug reports described above. Sniper Elite: Resistance comes up in some recent reviews with no settled view: several call 5 the better game ("The maps are MASSIVE!!!" one says in its favor), while others see the two as much the same.
4. What the developers could do
- Fix the remaining crashes and progression bugs. 14% of the longer reviews mention bugs or crashes, from "GPU device was lost" errors and DX12 crashes to missing quest items and autosaves that roll back too far.
- Bundle the season passes into complete editions and stop locking signature content behind them. 9% of the longer reviews object to DLC pricing, naming guns like the Mosin-Nagant, achievements tied to DLC maps and the Hitler mission.
- Smooth out movement and traversal. 9% of the longer reviews call the controls clunky and ask for crouch-running back, separate use and throw keys, and fewer invisible walls.
- Clean up Invasion and co-op online play. 6% of the longer reviews report cheaters, co-op disconnects with error codes and anti-cheat blocks, and players with the most hours complain about this the most.
- Give the rifle more room in future maps and DLC. Veterans comparing the game with Sniper Elite 4 ask for longer sightlines, more vantage points and fewer forced close-quarters stretches.
- Make enemy alerts less all-knowing. AI complaints center on whole areas reacting at once after one sighting and on reinforcements appearing behind cleared ground.
- Drop the Epic Games browser prompt at launch. Reviewers find the forced account page at every start annoying even with crossplay disabled, and some give the game a thumbs-down over it.
