What players are actually saying
1. Summary
Reviewers treat GrandChase Classic as the Steam revival of KOG's side-scrolling action MMO from the 2000s, and nostalgia leads the conversation: 35% of the longer reviews talk about childhood, internet cafes or the old servers, and many short reviews say little more than "nostalgic". Players enjoy seeing the cast, the music and the combo-driven combat again, and some who came back years after the July 2021 launch say the game is far better than it was. By reviewers' accounts the launch went badly: they found only four of the advertised characters, nerfed skills, removed dodges, crashes, full servers and a cash shop they called a cash grab. Reviews written in 2021 are 56% positive, and reviews written from 2024 onward are 81% positive.
The economy still divides players. Monetization comes up in 33% of the longer reviews: gacha costume sets, pets locked to one character, VP prices with no regional adjustment, and an endgame built on random stat rolls. The grind splits people too. Some enjoy it as a relaxing loop, while others describe it as a second job across two dozen characters. Crashes and bugs (19%) and disconnects (10%) lead the technical complaints; both are concentrated at launch but still show up in later reviews. Returning fans who accept the gacha tend to write happy reviews, and players who want a fair free-to-play path or the original game's systems tend not to.
2. What keeps coming up
What players praise
Nostalgia for the original Grand ChaseHigh
Nostalgia leads the theme counts, narrowly ahead of monetization: 35% of the longer reviews (667) mention it, and it appears in 24% of all reviews once the many one-word "nostalgic" reviews are included. Players describe playing as kids in internet cafes, with siblings, or on regional servers that closed years ago, and say the revival brought those memories back. The title music gets singled out ("Title screen music alone is worth the trip."). Negative reviews often start from the same memories, then explain that the revival changed too much, or that the game does not hold up once the nostalgia wears off. Some veterans compare it unfavourably with the original seasons or with fan-run private servers.
A large, varied cast and fast side-scrolling combatLow
Explicit praise for the combat, combos or the variety of characters and jobs turns up in 5% of the longer reviews (102). "Character variety is great, combos feel satisfying, and the anime-style visuals have aged surprisingly well." Players like that every character is now free from the start, that job advancements are easier than in the original, and that each character's four jobs play differently. Reviewers also welcome the characters added after launch and Uno's return, which reviewers place in August 2024. A minority finds the newer characters derivative or simpler than the original cast.
A revival that got better after launchLow
In 3% of the longer reviews (55), players say outright that the game improved, that it is "good now", or that they changed their recommendation. They credit quality-of-life updates, a shared warehouse, more free events, a UI overhaul and faster levelling, and some name a new game director. "I'm impressed with the changes they've made." An updated review from a 2021 player reads: "game is a lot of fun now and the monetization isn't as bad as it was before!" The year-by-year rise in positive reviews (Summary) points the same way, though some edited reviews stayed negative.
Co-op with friends and familyLow
Playing with friends, siblings or children comes up in 2% of the longer reviews (47). "It's most fun with a group of 4!" Several say the game is much better in a party than solo.
The soundtrackLow
The music comes up in 2% of the longer reviews (34), mostly as a nostalgic draw.
Where players are split
The grindMedium
Players are divided on the grind, which 14% of the longer reviews (268) discuss. Fans call it a relaxing, low-pressure loop: "Very good for an adult that wants a casual play while still e.g. listening to an audiobook." Critics describe daily and weekly runs repeated across every character to gain account-wide stats, limited entry tickets, and endgame gear that depends on rare drops and random rolls. "This game is more grindy than my full-time job," writes one long-time player, and another counts that "the daily missions to complete Hero Dungeons take 8+ hours total, if you do them on every character". Some later reviews say the grind has been reduced.
PvPMedium
PvP comes up in 9% of the longer reviews (166). Fans of the original call it skill-based and unlike other games, with deep movement tech. Others say it suffers from lag and delayed hits, that gear stats and paid items carry into matches, and that few people play it. "PVP is dead." appears in more than one review. A few ask for normalised stats in PvP.
Too easy now, or too hard at the topLow
A small group of veterans (under 1% of the longer reviews) say the revival dumbed down the early game: "Heroic Dungeons can now be cleared Solo under level 40." At launch the complaint ran the opposite way, with nerfed characters and tougher enemies making mid-game dungeons hard to solo. Later reviews describe easy levelling followed by a steep endgame wall that requires high total attack or a strong group.
Whether free players can keep upLow
A smaller group, 2% of the longer reviews (42), argues that the game is workable without spending ("You can get strong without spending."), usually by playing events and maxing many characters for free premium currency. They answer the far larger group of pay-to-win complaints (see below). A returning player who grants that free players can still progress also writes: "It is more p2w than I remember."
What frustrates players
Gacha, VP prices and pay-to-winHigh
The 33% of the longer reviews (644) that raise monetization keep returning to Seal Breaker gacha sets that grant stats and pets, low pull rates, paid revives and inventory, cash-shop items that used to be bought with in-game gold, and endgame upgrades that rely on paid scrolls and random rerolls. "Every system is a gacha, nothing is deterministic." Several players describe opening 100 or more scrolls without completing a set, and reinforcement attempts that destroy upgrade stones. One reviewer puts it this way: "KoG is number 1 when it comes to creating problems and selling the solution." Some positive reviews recommend the game while warning readers not to spend, and one sums it up as "The Nostalgia is Real, the Gacha is Realer."
Crashes, bugs and launch failuresHigh
Crash and bug reports appear in 19% of the longer reviews (374), and most were written in 2021. Launch-day reviewers describe full servers, Korean-language login errors, the cursor vanishing after dungeons ("I can't even see my cursor at some points"), equipment unequipping itself, broken job quests and crashes when changing resolution. Later reviews still mention launcher crash loops, missing DLL errors, and breakage on Steam Deck or ROG Ally after patches, though far fewer of them.
Nerfed characters and removed dodgesMedium
Character nerfs, dodge rolls removed or put on cooldown, weak third-tier skills, pets that no longer restore MP, and one life per dungeon instead of three draw complaints in 11% of the longer reviews (203). "Grand Chase Classic = Dark Souls without the ability to dodge." Most of this comes from 2021 reviews. Updated reviews report that dodges returned in some form and that characters were rebalanced, though a few veterans still miss specific moves.
Disconnects and lagMedium
Disconnects, lag or bad ping come up in 10% of the longer reviews (186), including the peer-hosted rooms where the host's connection decides everyone's experience. This complaint lasts beyond launch: some recent short reviews just say "always disconnect". Losing the run when the connection drops is part of it. A positive 2023 review asks for a fix: "Would be nice if the game would switch to solo mode instead of kicking me out from the room and losing all rewards and wasting a run." Others say limited weekly runs are used up when they drop.
An old client: UI, widescreen and performanceMedium
Complaints about the client fill 9% of the longer reviews (167): a cluttered or laggy UI, menus that stack, what some call a 55 fps cap, poor optimisation, and no true widescreen support. "If you set the game to widescreen it will look stretched." Later reviews credit a UI overhaul and a DirectX upgrade, but widescreen and dated visuals still come up.
Hackers and hack ads in chatMedium
Hackers or bots come up in 9% of the longer reviews (163), mostly in 2021, when megaphone chat was full of cheat advertisements. Players asked for real anti-cheat and moderation ("There is zero moderation."). Later reviews say the spam faded, though some endgame players still feel cheaters progress unpunished: "Hackers is getting away with it."
Pets, titles and inventory locked to one characterMedium
Per-character inventories, GP, titles, the GC Club buff and especially pets draw objections in 7% of the longer reviews (139), because a gacha pet or crest serves only one character. "Pets being character assigned instead of account wide like it used to be is specially hurtful to old time players." Later reviews note that the shared warehouse and account-wide card storage helped, but they still ask for account-wide pets.
Only four characters at launchLow
According to 6% of the longer reviews (114), the store promised 20 characters while launch offered four, with the rest released roughly one at a time afterwards. "20 unique characters but when you boot up the game there is only 4 available." The complaint disappears from reviews written after 2021, once the roster filled out.
No regional pricing for VPLow
VP is unaffordable outside the US, say 5% of the longer reviews (99), above all in Brazil, which reviewers describe as the largest player base, and also in the Philippines and Indonesia. "R$100 for only 5,000 VP is absurd."
Empty servers outside AsiaLow
Most regional servers are empty, according to 3% of the longer reviews (62), so players outside Asia either solo or accept lag. "you can only play on Asia server to play with people"
Bans players call unfairLow
Bans for "abnormal gameplay", for being in a room with a cheater, or after a stolen account was misused come up in 3% of the longer reviews (49), often with appeals rejected. "I never cheated. Not once."
Gatekeeping, kicks and toxic chatLow
2% of the longer reviews (46) describe hosts kicking players below a total-attack threshold from endgame rooms, unhelpful veterans, and racist or homophobic chat at launch. "gatekeeping is real high in here"
Language barrier and missing English guidesLow
Rooms and guides are dominated by Portuguese and Korean speakers, say 1% of the longer reviews (26). "If you need a guide, you had better learn to speak Korean or Brazilian Portuguese, because there aren't any in English."
Controller and key bindingLow
Under 1% of the longer reviews (16) say controller support has to be enabled in a separate menu, maps movement to the D-pad, and does not allow remapping: "why is the default using the D-pad on a controller to move instead of the sticks"
3. The player conversation
The conversation is lopsided in time. The first calendar week after launch (28 July to 1 August 2021) produced 1,327 reviews, 60% positive, and the positive share fell to 44% by week three as players hit the missing characters, nerfs and cash shop. Launch-era reviews are long and angry, often formatted as lists of demands, and many were later edited: 165 reviews first written in 2021 contain update or edit markers, some flipping to positive and some restating the same complaints years later. From 2022 on the tone softens, with more short positive reviews, and 2024 to 2026 reviews are about four in five positive.
Launch-day reviewers with almost no time played wrote about full servers, login errors and crashes. Returning veterans compare everything with the original seasons and private servers, focusing on removed dodges, nerfed skills and character-locked items. Players deep into the endgame write about gacha rates, stat rerolls, reinforcement failures, total-attack gatekeeping and bans. Brazilian players drive the regional pricing complaint. Reviews that identify the writer as new to the series are a small group; they tend to like the combat but find the UI and the progression systems confusing.
4. What the developers could do
- Give gear progression a deterministic path and soften gacha odds. Reviewers cite 100-plus scrolls without a full set, destroyed reinforcement stones and random rerolls as the reason the endgame feels pay-to-win.
- Make pets, titles and premium buffs account-wide. Players say character-locked pets and items multiply every purchase across two dozen characters, and later reviews still ask for the change.
- Fix disconnects and protect runs when they happen. Disconnect complaints continue long after launch, and players ask for a solo fallback instead of losing rewards and limited weekly entries.
- Cut the daily chores for alternate characters. Players describe hours of dailies repeated on every character and ask for main-character play to be enough.
- Add regional VP pricing. Brazilian, Philippine and Indonesian players say dollar-based prices make the shop unaffordable.
- Strengthen anti-cheat, moderate chat and review bans with evidence. Reviewers say hack ads in chat, cheaters progressing faster and unexplained "abnormal gameplay" bans make them doubt the grind is fair.
- Modernise the client. Players want true widescreen, a responsive UI, controller remapping and better onboarding for the many systems newcomers find confusing.
